We are not yet halfway through the first quarter of 2025 and it’s already clear that digital identity and trusted ecosystems more broadly are front of mind for many countries. Digital driver licenses in particular have made the headlines with insights from recent  hackathons and new announcements to issue digital credentials.

Like many jurisdictions that don’t issue mandatory identity documents to citizens, the topic of digital identity in Australia wears the #it’scomplicated hashtag well. Over the last decade, a number of initiatives within the private and public sectors (at both a state and federal level) have aimed to tackle the issue, with the objective of giving citizens a privacy preserving reusable identity.

As these initiatives gain traction and the number of users and services grow, there’s a need to ensure a shared understanding across a diverse set of needs. With the goal of delivering on this objective, a group of identity practitioners have set up the Australian Digital Trust Community Group (ADT CG) under the OIDF. The ADT CG provides a neutral platform for professionals in the Australian digital identity and trust ecosystems to collaborate. Its purpose is to facilitate discussion on local initiatives - within a global context - with the overarching objective of improving awareness and driving uptake of interoperable standards-based digital trust services.

Participation in the Community Group is open to all, inclusive of individuals from technology and service vendors,  all industry sectors, as well as federal and state governments. Community Group members are not required to join OIDF (although we recommend it). For more information about the Community Group, its objectives and how to join, take a look at the community page HERE

We look forward to welcoming you!

About the OpenID Foundation

The OpenID Foundation (OIDF) is a global open standards body committed to helping people assert their identity wherever they choose. Founded in 2007, we are a community of technical experts leading the creation of open identity standards that are secure, interoperable, and privacy-preserving. The Foundation’s OpenID Connect standard is now used by billions of people across millions of applications. In the last five years, the Financial Grade API has become the standard of choice for Open Banking and Open Data implementations, allowing people to access and share data across entities. Today, the OpenID Foundation’s standards are the connective tissue to enable people to assert their identity and access their data at scale, the scale of the internet, enabling “networks of networks” to interoperate globally. Individuals, companies, governments and non-profits are encouraged to join or participate. Find out more at openid.net.
